"Black Night" has a fingerpicking like a furist, drumming like a printer, and a hook that may or may not stick like glue. The next track has a nice ticking percussion that has me envision that boat whizzing on the water, like a motorboat where you only see the front of it, and when he sings the chorus the sound creates visions of it going under, with the appearance of a dance beat, possibly; ok, back to sailing. The first half is "Good," but the second half is betterdespite the fact that poor boat is "Going Under." I haven't even gotten past the first minute in the former track, and I already like it with that fingerpicking, then that prominent galloping beat, and right after"What you've been hoping/Could leave you broken/Don't be late,"comes this beautifulrockinviolin, and then it slowly builds only to start petering out twenty seconds before the song ends. there is nice fingerpicking and a thumping beat, nice strings are added at 1:54 as well as a nice change in beat that may have us dancing. The strings are starting to fade out of focus, whirr.. they are getting dizzy; tired, maybe let's just say this song simulates the feeling of becoming drowsy that one is finally able to"Sleep" after several days of insomina, and the strings really help that simulation.. "So you must like it, huh? and nice four times? do not you have any more eloquent words ye loser?" "Don't Try and Hide It" ....Meric you can write some great songs, and I can write some cruddy reviews; just bad writing some may say uninspired. It does have some expert vocals from Long and Case and instrumentation; . This girl who was highly guarded, loved him so, would not treat him that way and kept asking "When Will You Go" when it was just too much for him. It has this nice little riff that drops in a couple times a minute and this nice beat, there is a change in the second half. "Hunting Season" starts with lower xylophone like sound, and this tuhtuhtuhtuh beat with this fingerpicking that at 3:25 it gets a little dancy; the riff likes a good dancer. It's always nice to see and talk to one's "Companions," which includes backing vocals form Neko Case, which has real nice quick paced fingerpicking, leading into a slower paced floating rythym as he sings "I hold you in, you're holding out/If I can wait, could you be mine?/Companions/Are we the same? could we behave?/As companions" with a catchy beat, until about 3:40 where some strings and more finger-picking arrive Let's say that the more you know your friends the better it (usually) gets, so this ending is pretty sweet. "Don't Stop" is heavy on nice percussion and some flute it sounds, that piano, and that fingerpicking is varied in speed at times, and sounds real n...how about becoming? The time signature sort of switches back an forth if you listen enough. If I had to choose 5 audio crayons to color this album with they would be: Going Under, Good, Sleep, Companions, Don't Stop. Seriously this is a great record all the songs are good.
