30 seconds To Mars "This Is War"
Let's "Escape" before it's too late because the "NIght of the Hunter" is coming, and we need to arrive at the safehouse by dawn. The former slowly builds into a spacious passage to let you know if they can't take the world by storm at least they can do so for the arena, while the latter has an awesome beginning with that addictive synth and beat that follows through with a killer rythm section on this epic track. As well as the female voiceovers who appear in several points throughout the song, and the gang vocals from "the Summit" giving it's sound a wider space. "Kings and Queens" is another po-pic opening with an eagle's screech and some natural ambience before going into that addictive riff. "This Is WAR" has the bass on the frontlines as the tension builds until he yells "to fight" and then it has this powerful beat and shummering keysbass is muted, but is important. Soldier's drumming, and simulated horn in the back; a little synth as the beat slowly gets louder and this crash, and the chorus comes back in. "100 Suns" seems as if was recorded live due to the cheering and clapping towards the end. he "Hurricane" is coming, but we'll start of with some drops of rain caused by the piano, and, this isn't rain! They are bloops! The sound of this song just has us feel nervous as the calm before the storm; there is a nice delivery from Leto. It seems as if the last track has brought us "Closer To The Edge" which has this addictive staccatto beat along with the orchestral synths and the emotional delivery from Leto who resists just waiting to fall off the edge. "Vox Populi" has an intro with this huge echo-entenched handclap made for the stadium that would make Queen proud and a grandiose sound that would please you too! as well as those expansive gang vocals as they prepare to go to war; the keys are pretty great too. The first time I heard this I thought they had said work."Search and Destroy" is a minimalistic song where less is more, and it sounds like music meant to score a snipescene, or maybe tanks."Alibi" is another song that focuses more on vocals, lyrics and message and keeps limited amount of extraneous elements, which would only ruin the song. "Stranger in a Strange Land" starts out pretty quiet and minimal and slowly builds, but instead of going louder it quiets down at the point the vocals come in. There is this muted scream and the muted fireblasts leading to drums of the tribals. It doesn't seem like there is too much going on until the last minute where it wakes you up from the dream you were in slowly, but surely. The final track, L490, starts off with an itrritating droning sound, that wavers off by fifty-seven seconds and the quiet background instrumental passage can be through before you realize it was even here. A peaceful finish which creates images of soft rain, or snow falling after a long day of war; retrospection follows, and then is followed by a mantra, but I am not sure what is being said. If I had to choose 6 other warriors they would be: Night of the Hunter, This is War, Hurricane, Closer To The Edge, Vox Populi, and Stranger in a Strange Land.
