Sara Bareilles "Kaleidoscope Heart"
I was surprised when I saw this album on best of lists for 2010. The album may not travel any “Uncharted” musical or lyrical territory, but what is marked is worth the listen. The first song sounds slightly like the first single, or it reminds me of that, but that is not a bad thing at all. I like the lyrical aspect of the song. I seriously doubt I’m “Gonna Get Over You,” because this song is perfect. “Hold My Heart” is one of the finest examples of the impact a piano can add to the emotional factor of the song; maybe heavy handed, but if it wasn’t then the bones would crack because of the weight this cardiovascular organ holds. Internet Cafés can often make an intellectual with a laptop and above-average lexicon feel like the “King of Anything” and everything, but only because they have access to the internet; not only are they pretentious, but myopic! Some people are sooo cocky. The song is sassy, slightly brassy, yet still classy; there is a reason why it was the first single, and the subject manner was part of it. I will say that the rhythm this love has follows similar beat, but you don’t have to “Say You’re Sorry,” in fact I say “thank you.” It is funny how one day you wouldn’t even give someone a second thought before getting to know them, and after you do you realize you become a “Basket Case” without them. While this next song is not exactly a sunny Shirley Temple, the subtle optimism takes its cue from there. Maybe I will stop right now, and just “Let the Rain” do all the talking. Welcome to a song of wonder; slight cabaret, partial circus, and a scorned and scarred human being with a “Machine Gun” for a mouth who speaks in metaphorical bullet wounds. While the sound is bouncy, and misleading, I am probably “Not Alone” when I write this, but what scares me is “Something sinister and strange/That I haven't seen yet.” However, it can be just all in my head. I need to “Breathe Again” and calm down. Her vocal performance is magnificent in this one, as well as the Finale! Favorites: Gonna Get Over You, Hold My Heart, Say You’re Sorry, Let The Rain, Machine Gun, and Not Alone.
