Jennifer Hudson "I Remember Me"

To that person that hates on me because I am absurd and a little obscure, just let it be known that “No One is Ever Gonna Love You” the way that I do. I can be your best friend if you get to know me, but alas people cannot look past the shy personality and loud obscurity. Hudson’s vocals seem a little subdued, or maybe in those three years she was able to learn how to control the flow of her powerful pipes amidst the occasional start-stop dynamics of the piano and that drum machine. Ms.Hudson, do you have a song that recalls your performance in Dreamgirls, yet is more upbeat, and is moreso a declaration of your determination?  "I Got This." The lyrics are directed at an unreliable, selfish, compulsive liar in this tale of heart break. “I went to sleep on the cloud and woke up in the dirt” reminds me of a certain Disney princess who would text her middle-class knight “Where You At” if she landed in the present day. The upbeat percussion and piano is what keeps it ready for takeoff, but the vocals of an “Angel” are what land this song safely on the ground. “I Remember Me” is a self-declaration of independence The next song takes a structure with an ironically energetic rhythm in spite of the slower pace, which causes the confusion, some brassy synths, and mold it around lyrics envisioning the heartache if that special someone was “Gone.” They warn you to never say never no matter what genre you are classified as. No matter how much someone denies it, I think it is proven that “Everybody Needs Love” at some point in their life. The old school rhythm and blues disco horn-filled aesthetic of the next song is full of energy, and shows a more upbeat side of Ms. Hudson; props to Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys for its production. "Why Is It So Hard" to listen to this song? I mean I like the prominent percussion, the piano accompaniment, and the backing vocals are nice, but a little shallow on sincerity; it seems that there is substance there, but maybe it needs a little style? This next composition right here?  She sounds like a mama jama who is sexy, sassy, with ambition classy. “Don’t Look Down” unless you want to get kicked in the assy; by your own doubts and fear of heights. “There is no limit to how/ high we can go….” I would have to say that the next song is (or was made into) a tribute for her family members lost from that horrifc murder of her mother, brother, and nephew by her sister’s estranged ex. Even if the song originally was written for Natasha Bedingfield, and appeared on the UK pressing of her sophomore album, it does not lose its power and sincerity when singing to those blessed souls that are “Still Here” with her on Earth. The next song may be short, but has me “Feeling Good” with the brassy arrangement and lyrics full of shining suns, birds flying high, and butterflies having fun; “you know what I mean.” The last song confirms what I still “Believe” about Jennifer Hudson, and that is that she has plenty of vocal talent and range; sometimes it just seems that she doesn’t reach her full potential all the time. The song takes me to a church full of soul, and that’s how it should be, concerning the soul is what is covered lyrically, and does move me. Favorites: No One Is Gonna Love You, I Remember Me, Gone, Everybody Needs Love, Don’t Look Down, Still Here, Feeling Good, and Believe.
