Jill Scott " The Light of the Sun"
In this throw back jam opener with a classic hip-hop beat, and soulful sound that complement her delivery, Scott proclaims how "Blessed" she is; she sings every verse with love, pride, honesty, and a smile. The third line made me wonder if The Light of the Sun is really the light of the son. That is completely understandable because she is "So in Love" with her man; I just don't understand the "throw away my clothes on" part. I almost thought that Mr. legend was on the second track, but all apologies to Mr. Anthony Hamilton whose voice is also magnificent. It seems that she continues her streak of upbeat and positive music on track three, but this seems like it has more energy than the first two tracks, and I have no "Shame" in proclaiming it is one of my favorites; even if someone else has shame. I must give props to Eve for her appearance, as well as the A Group. Let's take a minute to let her regain her focus because she is "All Cried Out (Redux)" meaning she's doin' it again, but she sounded so happy! Which is why we need Doug E. Fresh and a couple minutes to vent and get over that fool who turned her smile into a frown. In the following track I must say "le BOOM Vent Suite" is that return to focus with a nice blend of funk and jazz. Let it be known that like Adele, this guy she sings about really hurt her, but in the same respect it sounded like it helped to create some great music. Ever feel "So Gone (What My Mind Says)" is that this song is pretty forward what it's about, and it addresses the same complication Kells had when he just had to bump n' grind, but this song is from a woman's perspective, and therefore, has a little more emotion attached to it, and features Paul Wall (who sounded pretty good this time). Scott picks up the spiritual phone in this confessional concerning what those thorns have done to her; on the roses given to her from that person she loved. She asks nicely to "Hear My Call." What should I say about the next track, should I comment on the sassy delivery as she talk/sings? What about the backing instrumentals? Ehhhh, maybe "Some Other Time," as I'm just not in the mood right now. I can't believe this song is over so "Quick." I'm serious, the song was under two minutes, and filled with plenty of pizazz. The test of "Making you Wait" has been done for a long time, but just isn't done by those who are not yet ready to settle at the time. Which is a good majority, but can change at any point in time as soon as they find Mr. Right; and it seems to be the fifth time is the standard. I think that is not exactly the same for guys, but I'm sure some follow the same approach. I haven't found someone, who hasn't already been "Taken" yet, but "Until Then (I Imagine)." Prince, if we be "Missing You," and your funk with that vocal thing you do; I'm sure we can listen to this song and think of you because you know I do. Sometimes I have those dreams that I wish would continue "When I Wake Up," and I think we all do, but then there are those dreams that cannot end soon enough; the sound would make everything beautiful in the morning. I love the message in the "Womanifesto." This may be a cop-out, but you go girl! It reminds guys that there is more to a woman than just her size, those lips, those thighs, that booty, those eyes, there is a heart, and if you realize, there is more to love than just the outside; good looks can be ruined by an ugly personality. I'm curious, jus does she mean when she sings about the power of his "Rolling Hills." Why hills? It makes no sense to me (so this is another song about somethin' else). The spoken-word/open mic night vibe mixing with the stellar instrumentation of the title track (which is oddly a bonus track, when it should have been on every pressing) is an example of the power of a good idea. The next song addresses the difference between what men and women think about sex; as Scott sings "I’ll be connected and affected" the difference is clear. It is almost like guys view the act backwards: they need sex to feel love, and women need love to take part in the bedroom dance number. Y'know, that "Love Soul Bounce." (But remember this is me we're talking about, obviously Not ALL guys view it that way.) These are some of my favorites: Blessed, Shame, le BOOM vent suite, Hear My Call, Some Other Time, Quick,When I Wake Up, Missing You, Womanifesto, and The Light of the Sun
