Nickelback primer
Nickelback, Nickelback, Nickelback...what can I say about them? I know what others have said that they are derivative, boring, and tailor made for radio hits, soulless, etc. I must admit that I have always liked Nickelback though, They were one of the only bands I had seen twice live, but that was because I wanted to see one of their supporting bands that had to pull out before the date I went to. I know they are not the best band in the world, and they are definitely not my favorite band, but I like them for who they are. They are a party band and write songs about drinking ("Bottoms Up"), getting high ("This Afternoon") or havin S.E.X.("Animals"). They also have songs that can glorify violence and fisticuffs like the Next Contestant that was hit on the Side of a Bullet, which to their credit was dedicated to the great Dimebag Darrell Abbot. There are songs about all of these topics, and those of topics related to the aforementioned, on practically every record. They also write songs on the ever-relatable relationships songs from the good ("Someone That You're With") to the bad ("Should've Listened"), and from the destructive ("Never Again") to the constructive ("If Everyone Cared") which are some of my favorite tracks from some of their records . Their 2001 breakthrough record had plenty of songs dealing with the pain of their past, but records following had some There are also plenty of radio-ready hits in their catalog, we don't need to list them all, but when you place "Someday" alongside their breakthrough hit, this is "How You Remind Me" that many of the songs may sound the same. They also have a problem with their records, as each record has some really awesome songs but then some that are derivative of what came before or what is on the record. These songs often are slightly more adventurous or just have something different about them that make them stand out like one of my old favorites I heard when I Woke Up This Morning, the Fight For All The Wrong Reasons that will occur after I Follow You Home, and If Today Was Your Last Day what songs would you list among the previously mentioned and several others that though may not be anything different are just real catchy and ask you to Burn It To The Ground.
