Destroyer "Kaputt"

He's right...I have heard this before somewhere in the world, at a different time, but know indubitably that I have not heard this song in "Chinatown" with it's spaciousness, which makes it odd; considering how cluttered the place can be. A jazzy and spacey introduction to the morose and cautionary tale of falling in love with old "Blue Eyes." When something is good it is often repeated to the point where the meaning is gone. However, when "I sent a message in a bottle to the press/It said, 'Don't be ashamed or disgusted with yourselves" three times just what did it mean? That the press is meaningless because now it's just about the green? There's more than just that..read it and weep, right before a "Savage Night At The Hotel".... I can call it in the air tonight, but if  a criminal is the only one to hear the flute playing on a "Suicide Demo For Kara Walker" What am I to do? As the song progresses, I find that many things pass for love these days; as a consistent beat on hi-hat is backed by keys, sax, and bass that like to funk the jazz occasionally even as they soar in the sky?  I was poor in poignancy, not very emphatic,  he was "Poor In Love," but Ok in everything else. He is fine in health, but poor in wealth; Bejar sounds as if he is in agony as he opens with the first few lines, and even when he asks "....why does everybody sing along/when we built this city/ on ruins?" You want to even if it is tragic. I think of the Prince of the prolific, at times , perplexing when I hear the vocals of Bejar "Wasting your days/Chasing some girl's alright/Chasing cocaine..." It all sounds like a dream to me too, that might just go "Kaputt." I usually fear for going "Downtown" because parking can be a pest, the environment can be exciting and intimidating at the same time, and all of those one way streets! I really like this trip musically, lyrically it can be kind of scary; all of the sudden you wake up as the whole city is drowning! "I was just getting used/To having you 'round./You went wandering/Around the world" So maybe the city is drowning in tears? If you must write a 'Song For America,' make sure that is memorable; pessimistic, optimistic,or even just neutral there is a lot more to like, but what sticks out the most is that squalling sax. In the "Bay of Pigs (Detail)" is in the imagery the lyrics create, the emotions that the sound might provoke, and the delivery that can be more spoken than sung. It takes awhile before the bay starts to wade, and when it does it sounds like that of a disco beat/latin strumming ;  He may sound bitter, but what can you expect when he is like a punctured beast during crisis on a cloud, and there is no one there to help? Best songs: Blue Eyes, Suicide Demo For Kara Walker, Downtown, Song For America,Bay of Pigs (Detail)
