I have always been a fan of Default
since The Fallout which was full of
high-energy post grunge rockers, with a dash of punk, angst, honesty, and a
little bravado. Then there were some slower songs that were far from faded. They won’t let you down either,
and I cannot live a lie. The second
album was not a sophomore slump, but was more of a (r)Elocation to a sound focused on more mid-tempo numbers and songs
ready for radio. While most of the album was lacking in the energy found on
their debut. They hadn’t completely lost their pep (“Who Followed Who” and
“Break Down Doors”) or angst (“Throw It All Away” and their cruel cover of a song from Jeff
Buckley). With each album they have progressed, and their third album took
their sound to the next level, and not only blew off the second floor, but
everything but the door. Now only One
Thing Remains, and that is an album chock-full of some of their best songs
ever written. I still believe that, and it’s not like I’m wasting my time
listening to their fourth album. It just doesn’t compare to their third effort,
or maybe I need to listen to it a few more times. The first song just begs you
to “Turn It On” with its cross of post-grunge swagger and a radio-ready chorus amidst
some of the aggression. “All Over Me” will always remain one of my favorite
songs and singles from this album, and in general, for its spunk, driving
drums, feel-good riffs, alternative nostalgia, and its solo. Maybe Richard
Marx, who co-wrote the song, is the reason for its flavor. Maybe it’s a “Little
Too Late” to promote this song on the radio, but it is not too late to suggest
you listen to this song; with the help of Marti Frederickson and that
consistent riff in the back this becomes one of their best slow songs. Who says it cannot be this good to say “Goodbye?”
So good it makes you want to play it on repeat until you have finished tearing
that hoodie your ex gave you. ‘Show Me’ is one of those aurally airborne,
almost as if it is best to listen while on an airplane; strings tend to do that
sometimes, and simultaneously affect the iris. It only hurts as I “Hold Onto You,”
but I cannot let go. However, “You're getting way too good at living your own
lies/Been broken down but believe somehow/ That the sun can still burn through
the clouds in your eyes.” When a new album comes out
from one of your favorite artists it is always exciting because they have
another chance to redefine their sound. I mean isn’t that how it’s “Supposed To
Be?” The track is one of their most distinctive, and some may call me
blasphemous for saying this, but would you say there was a beatle in the studio
when they were recording this gem? The next song seems to be written about the
phenomena where one can get “Caught in the Moment” when they become a parent.
Something changes from that point on:“When I was waiting for you just
don't think I ever knew/I was out there all alone now every
breath I breathe for you/If you fall you know you can just
reach out and take my hand/Give
to me the weight of your world I'll carry it for you.” I have always had a “Fascination”
with funk-metal, and I don’t know if this qualifies, but it comes close. “Yesterday’s
Song” seems to be recorded a few years ago; “You call it new sensation/I call
it time wasted/The outside is blinding you.” My Favorites: Turn it On, All Over
Me, Little Too Late, Goodbye, ComesandGoes, and Supposed To Be
