A powerful and remorseful confessional starts this awesome album. "Dear everybody that has paid to see my band, /It's still confusing, I'll never understand/I acted like an a***** so my albums would never burn/I'm hungry now, and the scraps are dirty dirt/I'm hungry now the scraps of dirty dirt." The arrangement is sparse, but effective for the emotion that is being achieved in "Deer". That twang in the sound and accent in his voice as he sings is undeniable. I'm Feeling "Mighty," and that this song with it's bad a-- rhythm section just scream swaggger and once the horns come in that kryptonite seems powerless as you ready to kick butt. "Pensacola" is another great rocker with some nice synthesizer, percussion, I like the horn inclusion around 2:00 as well as the solo, and the band singalong with the horn/drum timesig. "It feels like 37 years and I am nothing but a bank/If we could build our credit score "Incredible," they'll surely say/But I can credit only one to focus all the fame/It has the first and last even the middle of my very name/I am the greatest man that never lived and now I never sleep/I never lost a fight but never knew I started one the same/I never knew how capable I would become" are some great lyrics in the song. I am an "April Fool" every month of the year,or just a fool; you can take your pick. It has a nice nice riff and brassy backbone, grrrr "I tried once, I tried twice and I'm done/I am the once and irreplaceable son/I've got that rock and that roll/I've come around this time to set fire to your bone." I remember getting a "Pale Black Eye," but it was definately not as pleasant as this, even with its little wail and this wall of sound with those heavy horns and strings, simple beat, and the last 30 seconds just rock with drum and violin attack."Virgin" starts with a soft children's choir at 1:10 we hear the voice of Hull, with some ominous beat, and this addictive riff drowned by some distortion noise, and this audio fog. "It's never gonna be the same" after 2:58 as those trombone and then a children's choir come in with this huge sound. "Simple Math, it's how our bodies even got here/Sinful math, the ebb and flow to multiply/What if I was wrong and no one cared to mention/What if it was true and all we thought was right was wrong?/ Simple math, the truth cannot be fractioned/Either way...To hush the violent guilt that eats and never dies/In actual blame, they call me once the dark divides." The song just summarizes the awesomness of the record. Just "Leave It Alone" because the song is perfect the way it is with the string and horn flourishes. "When I was a fire I turned into ice/ Melting off my last feverish highs/And I leapt through the sunshine and into the night/Singing songs of my healthiest fears." I feel some "Apprehension" with that ringing twangy-riff that would make Homme proud, as well as a reggae beat, and some guitar in the back that starts and maybe a nice hihattappingaththeendwiththatglidingrythmdon'thurtme! These "Leaky Breaks" have the song going slow to make sure no slipping occurs, and the solo at 2:14 is really nice. Hey, there is a red light coming up, you should probably slow down now, there ..woah..ok, we're fine. Now there is a ta-tip-a-tapbeat and some more beautiful group vocals whoooooing as it slowly fades out.If I could solve only 5 equations as to why they are so great I would try to solve: Mighty, Pensacola, Pale Black Eye, Simple Math, and Apprehension.
