"I'm sending this to those/Who fell down, but then rose/I'm hot, I'm hell bound with these flows." Taking the "Intro" into account I figured he has contracted coksure; big head, illusions of grandeur, and not much to say.
The first song kicked my teeth in because I realized that he was signed because he possessed more than just "A Dollar and a Dream (III)," but definite drive and master of his craft as well. I just "Can't Get Enough" of this hook with Trey Songz and this island breeze; almost reminds me of big pimpin another song about a girl, but this girl must be special, and she might be the one to have him propose on his knee: "....Then follow yo' moves all week on twitter, probably make a gay n**** reconsider." It seems like the girl in the next song seems to be one of those narcissistic, power-hungry (p**** is power as Cole says), selfish, sex-crazed, and "is the chick ain't even have brains dummy like a b****." I can say 'Lights Please,' but could you you just flip off the switch? Though what she she doesn't know is that she has the power to heal, when he bangs that chick you can't describe how it makes him feel; this negative release is perfect for when s*** gets too real. The "Interlude" is a memory of a night in jail that he may never forget, but the same day he found out he was signed to Roc Nation. Cole addresses his frustration with the lack of respect, and just because one has verses that impress it unfortunately does not always equate success; even addressing racial stereotypes, but in the end he'll be more than just a "Sideline Story" on his gradual road to glory. The techno infused keys, the stacatto beat, the verses of Hova, and a ferocity you don't always see with someone who may be called "Mr. Nice Watch." He's got the 'Cole World' in his hands, he's got the cole world in his handsss: When I heard him blast into space with his first verse I thought of E.T. and Kanye West, sounded similiar, and he had an anger resonate in his flow that you don't always hear from more of the well-known rappers (instead you hear bland "I'm so hot, rich, can get any...etc." braggadocio). A song fit for playing after a one-night stand, or a song for those that like it a little freaky when they hit it "In The Morning." I mean Drake drops some great verses too, so it can be a called a three-way...right? The next song is one of his most sensitive; as it is about abortion and the "Lost Ones." The verses in the aforementioned stand out because they not only take the male's point of view, but the female's point of view as well, and includes more insight into his personal life. Many people in this world believe they are perfect, but this song is for everyone, especially those that are so caught up in their flaws and mistakes that they ignore the fact that "Nobody's Perfect" and that they are probably a little too hard on themselves. The introduction leads me to my dilemma, but Cole's was a lot more serious as this song recalls his revelation that his father was a cheat, and he was promised manhood as long as he "Never Told" his mother about this; No I.D. was revealed, and I'm sure he did not even know her name. "Rise and Shine" everybody because J Cole may be living his dream, but he is real as real can be, and raps with a message, drive, and ".... man I ain't got a mimic/Cause I ain't got an image to uphold, this real s***/I ain't got a gimmick, I just flow and n***** went nuts for/The boy that set fire to the booth." The horns, Sunday strings and militant drum line increase the impact that these verses have. Even though my passions aren't the same I respect that J Cole is not afraid or ashamed to admit the truth, and this accompaniment is a match made in heaven, but it should be because his flow is "God's Gift." There were plenty of songs that gave us insight into his life and moved me, but this one might lead to a "Breakdown." Straight Up now tell me are you gonna love me forever? I love the sample and its re-interpolation; especially how he merges it with his flow and makes it "Work Out" in the end.
