Madonna "MDNA"
I am always interested in what Madonna does with each record, because it’s not always the same every time. It’s not always good, but it’s not the same. A prayer is made by the “Girl Gone Wild” before the synths come; which may be the last night before the DJ makes us fall in love and we are excommunicated from heaven. “I got that burnin' hot desi-i-i-re/And no one can put out my fi-i-i-re/It's coming right down through the wi-i-i-re/Here it comes/When I hear them 808 drums.” The next song is an instrumentally minimalistic beat-focused, synth-assisted step into dub and walk on the darkside. It has the feeling of an audio soap opera; depending on your sense of humor you may or may not enjoy the last minute of this “Gang Bang.” I say that “I’m Addicted” in jest, and “I don’t care if you think that I’m strange” I like the sound anyway. A song preaching the healing powers of music through escapism and endorphin production that urges you to “Turn UpThe Radio.” I’m not sure if this song also subliminally refers to the whole industry as a trap “I’m stuck like a moth to a flame/I’m so tired of playing this game/I don’t know how I got to this state/Let me out of my cage cause I’m dying.” The next song was first premiered at one of the biggest sports events of the year, the superbowl, and it also had a similarly themed video to the first single. After she sings “Every record sounds the same/You've got to step into my world” she dares ask “Give Me All Your Luvin.” There is something about this song that makes it one of my favorites, and I’m sure that fact that Nicki Minaj and M.I.A are featured in the song does not have anything to do with it; maybe it’s the organ. The production values in the next song are contradictive, because while it can be the greatest asset, it can also be its worst enemy; the “Superstar” in this song is the lyrical component. “I Don’t Give A” what you think about me, or this song, but this is probably one of best songs in every aspect of sound, and MDNA seems to deliver her vocals in a livelier style, and is assisted by Ms. Minaj. The backing vocals give it a sense of urgency almost like she is the last hope to save radio music. I’m definitely not perfect, and it wouldn’t be off to say that “I’m a Sinner.” I try to avoid it as much as possible, but no one is perfect. The percussive beat along with the sparse synth arpeggio in the song are some of its best attributes and “..I like it that way.” When all is said and done you will not be able to bring anything that you have attained on Earth with you when you die, if you believe in the afterlife, so don’t just spend all of your money on things with high materialist value, spend them on things to help others and make ‘em happy. Make sure you have all of your “Love Spent” on someone worth it because when all you can bring are your memories, you want to make sure you have some great ones. This next track is a “Masterpiece.” Seriously, it is one of my favorite tracks on the record, and most of it goes to the beat, but the background organ and vocals help. The spacey synths in the introduction prepare you for the emotion you may feel once Madonna sings the first line, but it won’t prepare you for the sensation you experience when you are “Falling Free.” The instrumental bridge around the four minute mark reminds me of Wii for some reason. So far, two of the bonus tracks seemed better than some of the tracks on the regular disc, don’t speak because I know what you’re thinking, no matter how fast you try to say it. I don’t need the reasons why she became a “Beautiful Killer,” but she may live to die another day. This “B-Day” song sounds familiar, and no, it is not because it is a rendition of happy birthday, but for other reasons known. It is not terrible, but I know why it was not on the regular pressings of the record; it sounds like a rehash of a roundelay on the regular edition. This next bonus track could be my “Best Friend,” but it is one of my favorites, and it’s not alone. “Give Me All Your Luvin (Party Rock Remix)” is an interesting version, and if I remember correctly I think this was performed at the Bowl. LMFAO are featured in this track too; well duh! It’s their remix. Favorites: Girl Gone Wild, I’m Addicted, Give Me All Your Luvin’, I Don’t Give A, Masterpiece, and Beautiful Killer
