Justin Townes Earle "Nothing's Gonna Change The Way You Feel About Me Now"
Instead of drowning, which is what he intended to do as the last record came to a close, he survived. Battling his own addictions, be that booze or coke, and his own convictions has worn him out to just skin and bones away from home. The first song addresses his estranged relationship with his father and has him asking himself “Am I That Lonely Tonight?” The fact that he wishes his father would call says yes; there is light sax which is pretty nice. If I had heard this on the radio, I probably wouldn’t “Look The Other Way.” The album title is perfect because it’s true: Nothing’s Gonna Change The Way You Feel About Me Now. If you don’t like me and don’t bother trying to understand, you won’t and you’ll hate me. The same goes for Mr. Justin Townes, musically anyways, but that does not mean there is nothing to like on this record. People are different off of drugs, remember that, whether it is good or bad; usually when trying to flush out their system they are usually unpleasant, so after it is taken care of they will be more likeable (usually). The title track is a musical apology to someone, anyone who will listen; he knows he is not perfect, and that he has hurt people along the way, so he admits it. “Baby’s Got A Bad Idea,” but she likes good music; this has to be one of the most lively and distinctive of the songs off of this record. “Down on The Lower East Side” there are harpsichord and saxophone players that are fans of Americana and Blues, and in turn, collaborate. Everything sounds just right, but it “Won’t Be The Last Time” you have heard a song that is similar to this one. Have you ever seen or heard “Memphis In The Rain?” Let me just tell you it is another one of the more bluesy, yet lively numbers with some harpsichord and light horns at the start. Sounds like Mr. Earle is “Movin On” from his past life, or just trying to keep moving toward improvement. Best Tracks: Look The Other Way, Baby’s Got A Bad Idea, Won’t Be The Last Time, Memphis in the Rain, and Movin' On.
