Korn "The Path of Totality"
Every once in a while there is an album that is just like this; so full of excitement and promise, until you actually hear the record. To be fair, I really did enjoy Chinese Democracy, but it was hard to disregard the fact it sounded a little dated. Back on track though, this was a good album, but I’m glad that albums like these don’t come out too often. Skrillex is the most frequent collaborator on this record, and for good reason; those songs end up being my favorite. He also believes that “Chaos Lives in Everything.” The lyrics follow a certain structure, but they just get angrier and more violent toward the end. Noisia’s approach is more laidback and melodic in “Kill Mercy Within.” It seems that even after putting up “My Wall,” in Davis’ words, he cannot keep the demons out of his head; or in this track. Even by excision, the demon will still be right there. It was a great choice to be the second single because it helped build such excitement for the rest of the album, for me anyway. It is my favorite, and that is not because a “Narcissistic Cannibal” is threatening to eat me! Skrillex and Kill the Noise collaborate with Korn to make one of their most melodic and infectious singles. If you would like to hear Korn’s opinion of the “Illuminati” just listen to this track; featuring Excision, Downlink, and vocalized frustration. “Burn The Obedient” makes a friend with vocal distortion and a rapping speed demon; embracing the imperfections, possibly. I know there are no horns in this song, but I hear something like it. I guess there is no “Sanctuary” that can last more than a few minutes before the hostility burns it to the “GROOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUND!” You wonder who Davis is talking to in this next song, but it makes you want to “Get Up!” Maybe even break something, just as long as I don’t tick him off. The chorus is like toy soldiers, but only for the last three lines; this reference may be “Way Too Far,” but so is the 12th Planet. Did that make you Flinch? The finale is what “metal-step” may sound like in space. I’m sorry if I appear to be “Bleeding Out” irreverence, but the beautiful solo may bring back memories; it’s great, but not the same. My Favorites: Chaos Lives in Everything, Narcissistic Cannibal, Let’s Go, Get Up!, Way Too Far, and Bleeding Out.
