Filter "The Trouble With Angels"

We all knew it was coming, we present to you “The Inevitable Relapse.” After the album full of Anthems for the D*mned which was devoid of the industrial-tinged sound Filter had always had present, yet cut some off with each record. They sounded like a “heavier U2” as Patrick put it, and he was pretty spot on. The aforementioned track is a throw-back, with a poppier hook and some autotune. This “Drug Boy” is filled with more than toxins and medication, but a Korn-y reference. No wait, the song doesn’t include that! This review does. You take the backbone of a Korn song from their 2007 album, add some Deftones’ atmospherics, and then a really hooky chorus that reminds me of PJ’s The Fixer. If there is "No Love" then there is often no loyalty in that relationship. How is that for a headcharge? I’m not sure what the next song is referring to, but all I know is that there is “No Re-Entry.” It could be about life itself, and maybe about someone committing suicide; the lyrics from the first verse are most supportive of that theory. The instrumentals in the song are a nice break from the angst of the first four tracks with its melodic atmosphere (I think of Deftones again) and that instrumental passage. While the last track I wasn’t so sure of what it was about, the next song is definitely about a chilling murder tale, and the sound is something we have heard plenty of times on mainstream rock radio on “Down With Me.”  I’m not sure, but the verses outside the chorus remind me of Nirvana, while the chorus itself is Lady Gaga? I’m not sure if I’m joking, but the fact that the song was inspired by the kidnapping of Jaycee Lee Dugard is no joke either; considering it was a tragic tale. The title track sounds like their thoughts on religion and the hypocritical state of the church are unapologetically out in the open. So “The Trouble With Angels” is more about the restrictive prescience faith has over science, deterring progress at times, because it may conflict with what many believe to be; as well as Galileo. If you were able to seize the “Clouds” I congratulate you; because of all the baggage, but 747s are able to carry a lot of weight. “Fades Like A Photograph (Dead Angel)” is like a remix of the original, off of the 2012 soundtrack, inspired by the movie of the same name. The first bonus track has me "Drowning" in someone else’s sorrow, and is one of the more organic cuts. I have no problem with a song "Shot From The Sun," but I know why it was a bonus track; if I infuriate you, then get mad bro! The next bonus cut is relatable to a majority of people who say “If I was able to restart ‘My Life Before’____________, then everything would be much better.” The song has that going for it, but other than that it’s not my favorite. My Favorites: Drug Boy, No Love, No Re-Entry, Catch a Falling Knife, The Trouble With Angels, and Drowning
