Calvin Harris "18 Months"
For someone who created disco, he decided to lay low for awhile. It could have been the sign of the times because how much disco is on the radio? But traditional radio hasn’t always been reliable in playing music that is always worth it, as said by many, but satellite and internet radio may be another story. Anyways,
let’s say he did not get more recognition until “We Found Love.” It’s a great song, no doubt, and another hit in the Rihanna catalog. It is on the record, and why shouldn’t it be? It may be one of his biggest songs he played a part in. The most notable quality of “Green Valley” is the funky bass. “You will be the last thing on my mind/No regrets, do you know what that means?” is what stands out most on a track that has Kelis “Bounce.” The song is a fun kiss-off, and everybody needs fun in their life; especially after crying their eyes out in the weeks that preceded the realization that “It's getting better with you out of my life.” This has to be one of my favorites, and the song sounds like Tom Petty is caressing the mic, or am I the only one who hears this? “We’ll be Coming Back” after this example of a subtle country infusion to what people call EDM. “Mansion” may be made of some MJ funk, while “Iron” is mostly instrumental, and fortified with regret and damaged cardio-goods, and this hooky arpeggio. It’s fitting that Ellie Goulding is featured in a track Like “I Need Your Love” because she seems to blend the urge to dance and pour your heart out pretty well. Tinie Tempeh prefers “Drinking From The Bottle” becaue he misses an Ex, but I think that’s just how he rolls because they’re in party mode. “Sweet Nothing” may sound like an upbeat party song, but it could be an exercise in catharsis because it is actually quite depressing when solely listening to the lyrics. Florence Welch offers a powerful delivery, and sounds like this is where she is supposed to be. Most probably wouldn’t mind “School” so much if it was funky like this. Not really sure if it is Dizzee Rascal’s flow that gives him (the what?) from “Here 2 China,” but whatever. Ne-Yo sings “Let’s Go,” which is the antithesis of an anthem for resting on one’s laurels, as well as one that gives you the control to change your future; wherever you came from or what you have done, but that message is a little more nonchalant. You see this person and all of the sudden you say “Awooga!” Your heart all breaks through your chest, and then there is a montage of that wolf having an optometric boner in Red Hot Riding Hood. The final track, not a remix, features Ayah Marar, and says take care because “I’ll be Thinking About You.” There is a Swanky Tunes and Hard Rock Sofa remix of the Ne-Yo collab and a Diplo Remix of the Florence Welch collab; both worth at least one listen. Overall, he released a very cohesive and entertaining album, and while there were some big names present he still managed to keep some of the light on himself.
