The Vaccines "Come of Age"
Every band will eventually Come of Age in their career, see become boring, but I just did not think it would be so soon. It feels like it was less than a year, but in actuality it was around a year and five months. You probably have “No Hope” after reading the first sentence, but that was not my opinion. Lyrically, you can see some growth; who hasn’t had an identity crisis after or during their young adult years? Eventually, the instrumentals grow on you toward the end of the song, and they can be contradictory to their counterpart . “I Always Knew” they were fans of Sir Elton, or maybe it was just a coincidence that a sounds like a hit; with some distortion coming out of the proboscis of a mosquito. How often do you find a “Teenage Icon” so modest? To be honest, he is neither, but to answer the question you don’t see it too much. The honesty in the lyrics and the energy in the instrumentals are in their favor. While the last one seems to be “All in Vain” to describe, “Ghost Town” is one of the standouts; it has an old school boogie, and maybe a spook or two. While the most interesting quality of “Aftershave Ocean” is the title itself; it has some competition! The fact that it sounds like a mellow RHCP track, or bears a resemblance to the Strokes, is not a bad quality either. If you haven’t heard, Justin Young is in a “Bad Mood.” This is absolutely one of their more energetic moments and may turn that frown upside down, but that’s just me. If you are not a fan of this record, maybe this will give you a “Change of Heart.” Is there a subliminal message in “I Wish I Was A Girl,” or is it just jealousy and (sexual) frustration? So in the end, it was not really a slump, just different. Favorite Tracks: No Hope, I Always Knew, Teenage Icon, Ghost Town, Bad Mood, and I Wish I Was A Girl.
