A "Needle and Haystack Life" seems like Switchfoot wants to give U2 a run for their money with an anthem made for the stadium with the arena sized and shimmery guitar, and great beat "In this needle and haystack life/I've found miracles there in your eyes/It's no accident we're here tonight/We are once in a lifetime/Oh, oh/Don't let go/Don't give up hope/All is forgiven/You breathe it in(x2)/We call it living." But the next song has this punk attitude and great riff that has Foreman singing he is his own affliction and disease and that there is no drug that can be sold to make him well, yes, he has made mistakes, but he wants to live the rest of his life ALIVE, and not under medication. With this great solo and screaming of..alive for emphasis on "Mess of Me." How would you feel if someone told you "Your Love Is a Song?" pretty good, huh? Well, that is exactly what Jon feels for his love, and that no symphony could ever be sweeter. The following is a nice rocking song with a nice beat and thise atmospherics calling for echos to follow and causes visions of the calm before the storm, many dark clouds, what is that? That is "The Sound [John M Perkin's Blues]" of a heartbeat, followed by love in quantites "Enough To Let Me Go." The latter is another sentimental song asking if his receiver loves him enough to let him fall for her. Everyone wants to be "Free" of taxes, inhibitions, limits, etc and this song has this great riff and great drum work along with atmospherics making this song as big as the sky; a great anthem, and pump up song that then finishes with wonderful strings. If you feel that your shell is a prison cell listen to this song. It could be about how one's image they had created eventually causes that person to be pigeonholed in acting a certain way,and liking certain things when that person is not to be placed in generalizations. "Hello Hurricane" I was hoping you would not come, but you seem nicer than most with your sing along chorus and positive vibes. Really? How the...hey, weren't we just talking about being trapped in generalizations last track? "Always" have the strings worked well together with the beat to make a better song; a song devoted to his love. I mean, c'mon, what would you expect? "Bullet Soul" has this dirty riff and this part where he screams "Are You Ready to Go?" at the end which sounds really loud, and slightly distorted; kinda jarring considering the source. It repeats the sentiment that they are in this together and the kid has a bullet soul, asking him/her if he/she is ready. Are we done"Yet?" Nope, I have to mention that this song has Foreman running until his heart caves in and that if it doesn't break your heart it isn't love."Sing It Out" is a lovely anthem that instead of pumping you up, it makes you want to call that friend/love you haven't seen in 25 minutes, not me, I'm just guessing. the next song is a heartfelt song where the writer lays his heart on the line, but instead of an acoustic uses an electric, and asks "what are you lookin' for with red eyes?" and the lyrics are depressing "All of my days are spent/Within this skin/Within this cage that I'm in/Nowhere feels safe to me/Nowhere feels home/Even in crowds I'm alone," but at least he's holding on.So that's why it it's called "Red Eyes," and the end is an atmospheric/percussive-lite experiment. I don't want to say techno, cause it would be misleading, but it is different for them. The deluxe version has acoustic versions of "Mess of Me" and "Always," as well as a nice b-side that may require "Stitches," which has this eastern flavor. If I had to greet this Hurricane with 7 different songs I would play: Mess of Me,The Sound[John M Perkins' Blues], Free, Hello Hurricane, Bullet Soul, Red Eyes, Stitches.
