Maroon 5 "Overexposed"
This generation is Overexposed to so much media that not only is our attention span depreciating, but our sense of wonder as well. With music, there are so many artists left and right that it is hard to pay attention to a majority of the artists. Often the artists with the best hooks gain the most recognition; unfortunately, not every artist worthy of recognition receives it. Is this album worth your attention? Is it a flash in the pan, or does it have staying power? It depends on your point of view, really. Personally, I love the reggae-tinged “One More Night” more than the first single; it reminds me of the song that featured Rihanna because of the context. Like Levine is caught in the lust of the relationship, I must just be caught in the moment because the song that Wiz and Maroon 5 collaborated by “Payphone” comes to my mind first. Are they being honest though? “Daylight” is the first song which sounds like it is coming from real, instead of studio produced, emotion; off this album anyway. It becomes difficult to tell when an artist truly feels the emotions they stress, or if they are just writing for tears and downloads. The sparse notes soon open the floodgates of bumpin' bass and galloping drums at the discotheque, and who can forget the dubby break, the autotune, and the stadium filled ‘heys!’ Would you call that a “Lucky Strike?” For some reason, my favorite song has to be “The Man Who Never Lied,” and I cannot reason as to why, but that makes it sound like it is not worthy of the tag; I just cannot tell you why, and I will not lie. We all want to “Love Somebody,” especially who will love us back. Would you call this U2-esque with a subtle disco-ball shimmer? Usually you refer to some man as a “Ladykiller,” but since we are equal opportunity here, there are girls who can do just as well. Adam, I am not a “Fortune Teller” either, but I predict a hit if this was ever released as a single; just saying. “Sad” is another one of those songs which could have a lot of emotion in it, but you cannot tell if it’s real; maybe it’s because I am holding on a “thin, thin thread.” Who can Adam be singing about? “Tickets” to whose show? Is it referring to an artist who is basically a singing model? They can be gorgeous, but not sing very well, or have anything to offer lyrically. Who knows? I doubt it’s Christina Aguilera because she is gorgeous and has a fantastic voice, but her last tour was canceled; some of her songs do include substance, so it's less likely. What’s better than “Doin Dirt” in a disco-teque? How about doin’ it in a Cobra Starship? Favorites: One More Night, Payphone, Lucky Strike, The Man Who Never Lied, Fortune Teller, and Doin’ Dirt.
