Aloe Blacc "Christmas Funk (2019)"

Are you in a post-Christmas Funk? Maybe this gift to the ears can convince solace to meet you at your record player, streaming service or headphones, instead of that bottle half-full of empty promises.

"Tell Your Mama" that Aloe Blacc and his family wish you a Merry Christmas, and the happiest of holidays in this opening original that engages in funky foreplay. The latter wish is not directly stated but implied, but he does send tidings for a Happy Hanukkah at the end.

"I Got Your Christmas Right Here" may be directed toward the love of his life, but it can still bring you cheer, and be used countless times throughout the year, but this time is where it makes the most sense, and without offense. Did you hear? The piano implores you to lean on me (or more correctly, Blacc) and his music to help in those troubled times, they do have the power to lift your spirit.

With the countless covers of "All I Want For Christmas Is You," the list expanding every year, I did not expect to find another that can be cherished, instead of relished and or merely ignored, but this funky take is a nice break from the redundancy that can be expected when this time of year comes around again.

"I Can't Wait For Christmas" and "The Mrs. Saved Christmas" are two more additions Blacc's audio arsenel to alleviate the seasonal funk with his own; the latter of which documents the very first night before Christmas when Santa's plan goes awry, tucked in a chimney and the reindeer hear his cry, the delivery of the tale rapping, not wrapping, in style. I'm not sure if this paragraph would convince you that both songs are worthwhile; even though they are.

The following track is another modern classic that has countless versions, but this is one of those versions that stand out from the rest, and I guarantee this will not be the "Last Christmas" that I listen to this funkified gem.

As difficult as it can be for people around this year,

as they may be caught up in their own dreams of the best holiday they can muster,

a time where it can be easier to spread good tidings and cheer,

to give when even in the rough,

some learn it earlier than others, yet may still pine for packages

I can understand and I agree that they are nice to receive,

especially when they are from someone you love,

yet some only receive packages and not one iota of the underlined above

you'll see that presents are nice, but compared to love, there may never be enough

I really liked the sentiment of "All I Have is Love" and it reminded me Kenny Rogers' "Homemade Christmas in Kentucky" not because of sound, but the aforementioned sentiment, and both are worth multiple listens.

If you desire cheerier tunes "At Christmas," Blacc has your back, as he recites some traditions that not only his family may partake in. Just enough cheer to gear you up for a "Funky Ass Christmas" without subtleties

"Love Comes Home" is a song that can resonate with those who travel for work or travel for their passion they are able to pursue, and may not be home much during the year; it could be a song for the family members waiting for that special someone to return home, and it could be a song for those who are merely more sentimental during the holidays, but who isn't?

In the 2019 version of this album there is a bonus track appended; entitled "Mi Burrito Sabanero"
