Alicia Keys "Girl on Fire"
The wintry piano leads you to believe that this introduction to the girl on Fire may be a more somber affair, but it usually takes a while before spring finally rolls in after a long winter. She sounds as confident as ever, and shares a feeling of fulfillment; which could be due to the love that surges through her for her husband and son, as well as the music. She sings “A lifelong legacy, me loving you and you loving me/Oh, I'm not worried about tomorrow, tomorrow/All I know, all the time we have is borrowed, I feel no sorrow” even “When It’s Over.” This sense of feeling completely inspires her to write a song just as inspiring for someone like me or you to “Listen To Your Heart.” By track four, the swagger seems a little bloated in “New Day,” but makes up for it with the first single as she collaborates with another “Girl on Fire.” While we’re on the subject it has been said that she was trying to rekindle the flame set by her debut, sorry, and she does well here. Even with the Maxwell duet she focuses on the “Fire We Make,” which is about her relationship with her husband I’m sure. While “Tears Always Win” focuses on the separation of those two lovers, and the affliction it causes. Money has a definitive value, while the love that two signifant others share has none. Only because it has so much worth that “Not Even The King” can afford it; her delivery is reminiscent of Rachel Yamagata on this one. “Limitedless” gives a much needed shine to a band that hardly sees the spotlight; a jug-band! While “One Thing” I have learned is that “101” is her rebuttal to anyone proclaiming she cannot belt a tune and still strike a chord, on her instrument of choice. Favorites: Brand New Me, When It’s Over, Girl on Fire, Tears Always Win,Not Even The King, Limitedless, and 101.
