Jane's Addiction " The Great Escape Artist"
When an artist becomes enlightened to a fresh perspective on how to create music, brought on by a line-up change (or not), they sometimes lose the element that made them unique in their genre. A good deal of people know that this band has a habit of not just taking hiatuses, but disbanding as well, so we will not speak of that any more. The first song is for the hustler that never forgot the scene of the “Underground” after attaining worldwide stardom; it makes me think of Perry Farrell’s Satellite Party. It takes a lot of work to make it big, but some just get lucky. Not every artist that deserves recognition receives their just desserts, unfortunately. Perry Farrell is frustrated, and demands an “End To The Lies.” That bass grabs you by the ears as you get lost in the atmospheric groove; the poor sap this song is about must be preparing for his biggest pity party after this single was released. If you did not know, Trapt released a song of the same name three years before this one, and there are definite differences, but if you want to know what they are before “Curiosity Kills” than maybe it is a good idea to check it out. I have yet to figure out what the “Irresistible Force” is; just what is the reason I am drawn to the song, like a horny guy to sax. That was completely lame, and inaccurate, so I apologize. This next song sounds like it could have been a U2 song. You can be mad, and even hit me if you are offended; why would you? It’s not like “I’ll Hit You Back,” unless I had to. Dave Sitek has had an influence on this band after Avery left, and it’s apparent; as the anchor broadcasts the “Twisted Tales,” Sitek helps orchestrate the rhythmic approach. What is the “Ultimate Reason” to continue living? I can be corny and say “love,” and if people scoff, then let me ask what would be yours? Even if you “Splash A Little Water On It” the flower doesn’t seem like she will recover: “try and not to wake up the girl, no/What was she thinking trying to keep up with you/every habit you have? ohh/It's cause she loves you so.” The world is full of “Broken People,” and she was one of them. If you say that the closing song is full of the most energy and aggression, and sounds like it has that element missing from the majority of the songs from this record, then I can say you took the “Words Right Out of My Mouth.” My Favorites: Underground, End To The Lies, Curiosity Kills, Irresistible Force, Twisted Tales, and Words Right Out of My Mouth.
