Vivian Girls "Share The Joy"

Before I heard this album I was ready to Share The Joy, and then after I listened to it for the first time I was thinking “more like share the misery.” I was surprised to find out that Bethany Constantino was not in the band because they sounded like one from the Best Coast. While attempting to sound unlike “The Other Girls” they partially succeed! While sounding like the aforementioned band, at least vocally, they don’t sound like like any other female band I have listened to! “I Heard You Say” that I was an idiot, and I would say I agree; I realized after several more listens there is more joy to be shared here. The vocals can take some getting used to because the tones can be kind of annoying at times. There is a lot to like in this song with the subtle bass and multiple harmonies, the driving and putting drums, and the breezy sounds of summer. The next song suggests you “Dance (If You Wanna),” and I do! The rhythm sounds perfect for doing so, but no waltzing here; instead you can do the solo spaz out, or just sway your top half spasmodically. This “Lake House” does not really seem like one you can relax in. It sounds like one of their edgiest moments due to the prominent drums (in speed and general volume); don’t go expecting a metal song, even if the solo is pretty nice. I forgot that there is another edgy moment that directly follows after the previous track, but this time the angst is released by every band member equally. I’m not “Trying to Pretend” I like this music; I know I do. The spoken word intro in this next song makes you feel as if you’re the younger sibling as you listen to your sister’s conversation; the good thing is that you don’t have to worry about getting caught. Our deal can be simple: I write, and you either roll your eyes and ignore what I say, or “Take it as it Comes.” We have all dealt with the “Vanishing of Time” as we get caught up in a project, or surfing the web (come on, you know that happens at least once every two weeks; actual time may vary), so it is understandable that when you enter an enticing rhythm you just don’t realize that practically four minutes has passed. Simmer down! You’re not the only one who fears “Death!”I get it you do not to repeat it so many times. The record’s finale is bookmarked by another six-minute plus miniature epic taht may put “Light In Your Eyes.” It seems like the drums disagree how fast the song should sway, but a balanced rhythm is kept along the way; the rest of the band seems to get caught up in a snowball of sound by the time finishes. My Favorites: Dance (If You Wanna), Lake House, Trying To Pretend, Take It as It Comes, Vanishing of Time, and Light in your Eyes.
