Emery "We Do What We Want"
From sailing in shallow seas to listening to Freddie Mercury, studying politics, or disguising mistakes with goodbyes, among other things they follow this motto: We Do What We Want. It starts screaming like a banshee caught in "The Cheval Glass" and then when the clean vocals arrive they are backed by a music box. When playing with "Scissors" you must be careful, and watch your mouth, or your vocal cords. This track seems to focus more on harmonious sound, and the screaming is not as unnerving or jarring as the last track. The subject is serious, scary, and "My hands are shaking and they won't stop, as the world becomes a hospital room/I am not the one to ever disappear, but it's over now (over now)/Say it for the last time, one last time/I want to let go of this world for you" Would that be leaving this world of suicidal temptation? I'm not sure, but I always wondered why suicide was a sin, and then it hit me. Despite "The Anchors" found in the next arrangement, it still manages to blast full steam ahead. As the first verses are sung it sounds as if a mass has begun to guide us as we fall under the "Curse of Perfect Days," it sounds paradoxical don't you think? When Head screams, it sounds like Jacoby Shaddix at first. The final line sung rings so true, and is something many people can agree with: 'I want so much more in this life.' Many people work hard for the money they earn, not just to sustain life, but to better themselves and/or bring them to a better place (financially or mentally). Sometimes they do so without actually living life, but living through it; that this next raise will make life better but then they do nothing after the fact it happens (they still DON'T LIVE life), and maybe that is what that last line means. They thought they were happy with that life because they were happy, but if a life is only lived for oneself down the line it will lose it's shimmer and feel like nothing; no matter how great a time was had. "You Wanted It" and you got it..they came screaming right at the get-go. Maybe it was all those lies that they were talking about in the last song; that they were happy with their life, and now they realize they're not. The instrumentals, breakdowns, and rounds that are found in this song are something that "I wanted, I wanted, I wanted, I wanted this," or enjoyed it. "I'm Not Here For Rage I'm Here For Revenge (More Than Your Hook Up)" with "Daddy's Little Peach." The former is a relationship song where the boy is in love with the girl, but she was just using him; he was played, and so was the final guitar riff, well. The arrangement of the latter is that of almost like a lullayb that hits rough patches during a hooky yet jagged chorus. No, Emery "You're so unoriginal, it would have never worked." I'm surprised you have a disc marking Ten Years. I guess "I'm Addicted to Bad Decisions." I usually try to avoid saying, but sometimes I write, things I shouldn't. SOme of the first lines hit me hard "If I could just kill myself/Would it also kill the remorse?," and reading the rest I say the majority of them are something I can relate to. I don't like to drink, so I don't really relate to that part, but If "I Never Got To See The West Coast" I wouldn't be too disappointed, or at least I don't think so.I must say that instead of falling asleep with these last two songs I find them to be a powerful pair of earmuffs, and you can try to "Fix Me," but I thin I'm more so misunderstood; can reliate to the lyrics in this song too.My Favorites: Scissors,The Curse of Perfect Days, You Wanted It, Daddy's Little Peach, I Never Got To See The West Coast, and Fix Me
Mogwai "Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will"
I was mislead by reading the title, especially when I had no idea what type of music they created, but I was definitely intrigued. 'White Noise' contains equal power within a fixed bandwidth at any center frequency, and reminds me of the adult alt sound of Snow Patrol, so no matter how loud you play it you probably won't offend anyone, or successfully imply you are angry(if so). I originally thought of white noise as something more supernatural such as hearing feedback from lost souls, but if so, this wouldn't be so scary. The lyrics seems to go round and round like "Mexican Grand Prix" but as the racers are racing in their metallic speed death-cars the vocalist seems to be riding in vocal distortion, or would that be AUTO-tune? The organic synthesizer reminds me of a certain video game involving a certain plumber. As a race comes closer to the end, the competitors want to make sure they have the upper hand; all the players seem to be competing for your attention, simultaneously, at some point of this track. "Rano Pano" is full of eerie distortion, yet does not lose its melodic appeal, or that urge to sing along, even when the lyrics are invisible (like that ghost in the machine). The organ must be here to mourn those who have collapsed from the plight of "Death Rays," which sound harmless, and maybe that is why they felt they were not in danger; like UV rays? Around four minutes it gets even better. This trip to "San Pedro" may be the shortest track on here, but the energy that song has is enough to get your adrenaline pumping for some high-activity; whatever it may be. I wrote "Letters to the Metro" and they had seemed to get lost, oh well. I got lost in this song it was just good contemplation music. This next track is another one of those that are perfect for a "George Square Thatcher Death Party," but one where you dance until you die; fun, no? The bass comes closer to the front this time and the rhythm is good for dancing; not breaking, twerking, shuffling, or anything that requires more than moving your upper body in sway (80's style). What does that mean? Now all I need is the instructions,oh..I have to write my own instructions on "How To Be A Werewolf?" How should I know? I was hoping for an easy answer; well, it sounds more like it should accompany instructions on how to become....hmmm..a unicorn? an eagle? Or something else that flies because this song soars. The next song is "Too Raging To Cheers." Yes, as lame as that is that's all I got, however I do think of The Receiving End of Sirens. It stinks if you meet and artist you respect and when you have questions or something you want to say, but all that comes out is "You're Lionel Richie." I prefer the more enthralling second half, but I cannot help but think of a time I went night diving when I listen to the first part. These are my favorites: Mexican Grand Prix, Rano Pano, Death Rays, San Pedro, George Square Thatcher Death Party, and You're Lionel Richie

Lykke Li "Wounded Rhymes"
"Youth Knows No Pain" as I have heard, or maybe it is just that the pain is felt, but it takes a lot more to hinder our drive, but then of course we have those buried in it to the point they become numb. Think Santigold with a surfing circus! You can make something out of nothing, it has been done, but I'm not sure if it would be best to make "Love Out Of Lust." Sure you can make a potion to cure 'Unrequited Love,' but unless you are ready to drown in denial then I suggest you avoid alchemy. All of the ingredients (musically and even lyrically; she says more qualitatively than quantitatively) are perfect to perpetuate the sorrow and pain that often accompany that type of love. I would love to "Get Some" more of that energy that she generates in this song, and if I had to equate her musical vivacity with her... ugh.. never mind. The title may be suggestive, but the lyrics are probably what you would expect, and that's okay. "Like a shotgun needs an outcome." Cum on! Do I really need to continue? I know...blech! It might not be so specific to rid the "Rich Kid's Blues," but it might work on the general blues. I don't know if people would agree that 'Sadness is a Blessing,' but when it hurts more to be alone, in desperation that pain may become the significant other, and when she sings "Every night I rant, I plead, I beg him not to go/Will sorrow be the only lover I can call my own?" you cannot help taking cover (with some tissues handy..trite, right?) "I Know Places" where songs like this can go far, especially the airy instrumentals in the final minute-thirty.There is not a lot going on in the first three-quarters we'll say, but what is going on is (add complimentary adjective here). This beat has me far from drawn aback, but on her ceiling is the name of her lover, on her wall she screams his name, please say you'll never leave home for you have returned dear "Jerome." I wonder if it was he who had wrought these wounded rhymes upon me, the pain, the sorrow, slight eccentricity; worth a listen, go and see. I know this is Laaaame, but that is me. You can "Silent My Song," but it will still resonate, and still exist whether you sing along. There are two things I am not sure: whether you would want to silent or sing , or if it is a happy song. Love does not exist without pain, especially that which is unrequited. My favorites: Youth Knows No Pain,Unrequited Love, Get Some, Rich Kid's Blues, Jerome and I Know Places.
Amos Lee "Mission Bell"
A lot can happen in a year, even more in three. People can change too; fame can be a horrible catalyst changing one's original personality from humble to an egotistical you know what. Also, an artist may change their style to something more lucrative to grasp that two-sided sword, and more cash. No worries here, Lee keeps a similiar style and seems to be the same . He still feels that he should take a trip to "El Camino" and wash his soul clean because his heart has become sick. Could it be fame that might have caused this prince this affliction? "Yeah my hearts grown sick/I've got a shepherds crook as a walking stick." Maybe it is not fame, but more so what comes with this type of work that has inadvertently caused his love pain. The rhythm of the next song, whole song in general, is perfect for listening to under the summer sun as the "Windows Are Rolled Down." Funny, how a song with title like this has no 'Violin' to speak of, but arrangement and all of its components stir up enough emotion without the aid of one. His heart is a "Flower," and the sound can be compared, and voice sounds, similiar to Gavin Degraw. Oh come on! You're leaving on me? You are not even going to finish reading this garbage? Please "Stay With Me." As Lee sings on his own in that smooth voice, I find that as the woman he sings to is reluctant to stay his guest vocalist, Priscilla Ahn, is reluctant to do more than hum, but if she did more than that it would probably lose its magic. I love the folky arrangement (featuring Pieta Brown), and truth be told, It takes a lot of love coming "Out of The Cold" because you can walk through h*ll without a warm heart sold; some say you need "Jesus" if you want to grow old. I do not say I agree or disagree, but I will not push on others what I believe. "But now the world has jaded me/Oh, corrupted and defeated me/You know I never thought you hated me/But I’ve never felt so alone" are probably the strongest in this song, and some of these lyrics I can agree with, but I will not let some of these come true. Society has a way of perverting someone's good intentions, even you. "Hello Again" It has not been long since I had heard a strong arrangement, but is the saxophone new resident around the Mission Bell? I cannot say that "I Learned A Lot," but I did like the experience. You can even hear the wind blowing and feel the weight of sorrow in the sound, and as the wonder wall collapses Lee prepares a "Cup of Sorrow" as the storm brews a mighty show.Maybe the rain is simply for the tears coming from those "Clear Blue Eyes" which features Lucinda Williams in this soulful duet. I guess all of the best songs off this record are "Behind Me Now." The song is a depressing way to end the record, especially with the last lines. That is why they have a bookend, 'El Camino (Reprise)' featuring country legend Willie Nelson! My favorites: Flower, Out of the Cold, Jesus, Hello Again,Cup Of Sorrow, El Camino (Reprise)

Big Time Rush "Elevate"
I am a big time fan of the show of this group's eponymous namesake. However, the music not so much. They start off pretty strong with the first song, and it's true, "Music Sounds Better With U" because without it ,it sounds like you're saying "I'm sick!" Who wants to think of being sick when you're talking about one of the best things in the world. Guys like me, like hooks like this, and honest-ly... If only you could "Show Me" where . This song probably would be successful in scoring a scene of falling in love "All Over Again" at a club with its lovely piano and string dance partners, and a pace that is dance floor ready. Man, you have 'No Idea' how much I can relate to this song, but the girl that I love is already taken; or so she has told me, oh well. The pace in this song is slow, but the beat is much quicker, yet melds well with the four-part piano shimmer assisted harmonies. This song is as saccharine sweet, and beautiful as a "Cover Girl" with the swaying strumming and it's in the pocket beat, and who can forget the message the lyrics repeat? The song says "Love Me Love Me," and I say fool me fool me; it does. I would say it's the change of tempos in this song that make me like the song, or maybe it's because I am dizzy from the teamwork the beat and synth use against me. When I rock, they use auto-tuned vocals.'If I Ruled The World' there would be many things I would wanna change too, like ending discrimination, among other things, but I probably would not change the chorus, which is one of those big ones many boy bands are known for. How Can I forget that Iyaz is in this track, because he introduced himself in the beginning, and reintroduced the fact he was there in his verse. The band starts small, but if you wanna dream and sing out loud you need to start somewhere. I know what it feels like to be 'Invisible," and what about the female vocals? Is she invisible too? I thought you were going to try to make her feel the opposite way. The dancefloor disco is ready to begin the 'Time of Our Life,' and while the lyrics aren't the "Superstar" of these two tracks the harmonies and choruses are. I can assure you that 'You're Not Alone' if you hate what you're reading, or if you dislike this band;I never said I disliked them. I cannot help but think of the time of never, and that's when i'll stop loving you.If this song was a single it might "Elevate" them to a higher level with those big consensus heys, the party rock vibe. "Windows Down" has to win the prize for the best single, in a re-interpolated and re-energized version of song 2; without it becoming an insult. There really were only a few songs I didn't like and this track would not score the time of our life, nor be a superstar.
Daughtry "Break The Spell"
This "Renegade" does not slow down to ive me a chance to figure why I like it, several tempo changes (not drastic), and this distinctive grunge-funk riff. Here is the Daughtry, we know with airy melodies on acoustic guitar that break into a huge bombastic catchy chorus and vocals with nice meaty riffs that may not end up "Crawling Back To You," but won't have to because they would be stuck in your head after several listens. It seems like I'm "Outta My Head." What is this percussion doing? What about the rhythm? Does he feel like moving like Jagger? This dance/post-grunge experiment is much appreciated, and closer to classic rock than the paralyzer with its meaty riffs, stellar percussion, singalong chorus, and group vocals that I cannot get "Outta My Head." Is there a voicebox? I gotta say that the previous track is the "Start of Something Good," and speaking of the latter, the song just shouts singalong hit to kick off an early spring or a song to soundtrack the long winter days, and gives us hope. Isn't it how "Crazy" a single solo or riff can make a song that's nothing special a favorite? Just an observation, but the vocals are great, as well as the instrumentals, and the chorus doesn't have to be written about; we know it's huge. There is something about the song that won't let me "Break The Spell" that has me enraptured because Daughtry, who is paralyzed by this love for this girl, who might have committed witchcraft ; this song just has me in it's spell as well. A powerful chorus/vocals, driving percussion, and addictive riffs is all I can say..nope, still like the song just as much. What goes up, must come down, but f*** it "We're Not Gonna Fall." Maybe my open mind has "Gone Too Soon" because I liked the former track, but it was nothing special. A nice catchy song to be expected from the band Daughtry and a nice strummed intro with a hovering rhythm section. Maybe it's just because I'm "Losing My Mind," so I am incapable of describing some of these songs, but it is modern rock, so a lot of it sounds the same. Which makes the little things matter, and in here Daughtry sings in his upper registers, which sounds really nice, and are there female vocals too? Beautiful song to soundtrack someone diving in insanity. Two great songs in a row "Rescue Me" from some okay tracks, and now a song that may even take us to the Summer of '69 with that opening and recurring riff like a time machine! Make it three.... that's "Louder Than Ever." So we rode in a time machine, but how can we ride a "Spaceship" in.. oh wait, there was one by 1969; another feel good track about love. A song about not following the mold and being yourself with a very easy to singalong chorus, not just because it's catchy, but because it's real simple and is a good part of the song."Who's They" to tell them how to make their songs, or to tell you how to, right? Another one of my favorites and "Maybe We've Already Gone" tells us something we have heard before, about something coming back around and that his ever-improving vocals sound better now (he's not afraid to widen his range). I can say I liked this one too, but this following song has a lot of good stuff in it, including the type of topic we can all relate to, unrequited love, and what else? "Everything But Me." The lyrics tell me it's about that one girl that might not be the right one, but one that had the right key to his heart which allowed her in and forever she will stay there. The record ends with a short beautiful acoustic "Lullaby," dedicated to family and friends, and may be the perfect song to put him to sleep when missing his family and friends becomes hard to bear, and I mean that in the best possible way. Strongest Incantations : Renegade, Outta My Head, Break The Spell, Losing My Mind, Rescue Me, Louder Than Ever, Spaceship, Maybe We've Already Gone, and Lullaby

Jason Derulo "Future History"
Let's do a short history lesson. I know..GROOOAN. It's fitting though isn't it. Since he was sixteen he was writing tracks for artists like Danity Kane, Donnie Klang,Cassie, Sean Kingston, Diddy and Lil Wayne. In 2006 he was discovered by Mr. J.R. Rotem, and signed to Beluga Heights Records/Warner Bros. Records. He finally released his debut single in August 2009 which plays hide and seek with a little sample from Imogen Heap that asked "whatcha say" to those that didn't believe. After it became number one in November of the same year he began work on his debut which also sported songs that were not just hits In My Head, but were legit hits that prevented the first single from Ridin' Solo to hit central? Well I'll tell you that I "Don't Wanna Go Home" because the party just started which not only samples Show Me Love by Robin S., but then also re-interpolates Harry Belafonte's "Day-O (The Banana Song)" and makes it his own with it's very upbeat and club/dance-friendly sound, and lyrics about ...what else? Partying and everything that comes with that. Now The second single is about Derulo's "It Girl," which has Derulo belting in the higher registers at times, and singing about his devotion and dedication; while proclaiming her as his biggest hit, and how amazing she is. There is some heartfelt acoustic leading to a catchy drum- machine beat and keys, and a whistling chorus. The history of "Breathing" is as long as the time the first complex organism started, so we'll fast forward to this track which can be labeled as dancehall, but is more atmospheric and spacious, especially when he proclaims he only misses his love when he's "breeeeeeathiiiiiiiiiiiing," amidst the echoes, and has some tribal attitude making it more distinctive, and a very memorable track, no wonder its a single.. The next song warns us to "Be Careful" as it starts off with some piano, and follows with a heavyhand-clap beat and soap-opera strings, that if you read the lyrics seem to play out like a soap-opera. Dance beat, steel drums, and this catchy recurring video game synth (which remind me of New Boyz' hit with C Breezy) and lyrics when written seem like it was said to just "Make It Up As We Go," but isn't that how a good deal of lyrics are written? To some extent, I know inspiration comes in waves, so it can be hours between verses at times. The arpeggiation is really nice too. If you're with someone you love, you would hope they would want to "Fight For You." In this RedOne produced track we are taken to Africa. There is a lot to love..there are some gang-vocal heys, the staccato drum machine beat ,the soaring chorus, the synths, the island influence, and the assistance of female vocals, besides the whole devotion to the object of his love and affection displayed in the lyrics; I cannot deny that he sounds like Ursher in this song at times. The addictive easy to sing-along-to chorus came back on as I was writing and I just hit the back of my head. It also has a spectacular ending with some latin flavored guitar, singing in the higher registers and sound effects of glass shattering to (ironically) "Pick Up The Pieces," and bring the song together. The lyrics' pieces are largely that chorus, but some pieces are sharper and cut deeper than others. If people just gave in to the habit of "Givin' Up" the future would be history!! No more innovation in many different facets. Is that all? so no more cures, no more new technologies..ok that's enough. At first I thought it was about avoiding love, but it sounds like the sequel to riding solo, where now there are two people in the relationship and no longer will he be interested in anybody else he; says he is going to give up all of the games and girls. The next song has the slow groove and beat, and occasionally speeds it drum machine beat, the synth is very gloomy and the song is addictive, but kinda depressing. "Bleed Out" seems to flash Derulo's deuces in the air. This next song? "That's My Shhh" which has been compared to the type of music made for making love, that Jerimih and Trey Songz are known for, and he even sounds like both in this song. The song sounds very tasteful with the angelic piano keys and light and airy beat; with his higher registers being used for a good part of the song, but the lyrics cannot help but be suggestive. If you are in love, Raise your hand! If you are in love with your "X," then this may be the perfect anthem for you, or if you're not it can be a perfect song for the club. However, the reason may not even be love, but confusion, because sex causes its victims to misinterpret the feeling they get as love (as seen in the lyrics). The song has me in lo-lo-love with its style. "I Had My Choice To Watch/As You Ripped Out And Stole My Heart/Over And Over Again/You Made A Fool Of Me!" and now I feel "Dumb." Derulo's pain-stricken vocals and the heart-tugging piano and chords have kept a strong relationship until there started to be a breach. The short rendezvous had between the beat and guitar was cut short by the piano's discovery of the deception and leads to a slightly abrupt ending. The first bonus track has me on "Overdose" of Derulo; it's not a bad song in the least bit. The beat is easy for you to dance to, and rest of the instrumentals are good too, but I like his delivery singing the first line of the second verse as it changes the accompaniment and sounds like a beautiful howl? Last, we end with a song that has an energetic beat, several tempo changes, some vocal distortion, and chipmunks that snuck in the studio. The verses as well as the way they are delivered are fun, and all of the sonic components thrown in there make it a fun listen even though its nothing new. What is its name? Just "Give it to Me." I did. My favorite tracks are Don't Wanna Go Home, Breathing, Be Careful, Make It Up As We Go, Pick Up The Pieces, Bleed Out, X, and Dumb.
The Get Up Kids "There Are Rules
'Tithe" is supposed to mean to pay or give a tenth part of (voluntarily) ; especially to the church. Reading the lyrics I ask, just what does this song have to do with the church? Wouldn't it make more since if there were ten songs? The intro which is heavily reverberated and unintelligible, but connects with the meaning of the song and as the drums start I hear something that reminds me of the recipe for boiled frogs; which is still recognizable, but as every cook has their own style or own preferences for what is good and what isn't they change it accordingly. I guess the first rule must be that if you rework something, make it worthwhile. The second song's rule seems to be to keep your promise, especially if it is to someone else, if you want to stay out of the "Regent's Court," and the song is promising. The next song won't "Shatter Your Lungs," nor will it shatter your vocal cords, or your ear drums, but I prefer the irony in that over something predictable. Rule #3 would then be to occasionally title your song with ironic flare? The sound is tragic, but not as tragic as the story; the sound seems like one of the weaker songs from the land of Zooropa, so it's not that bad really. Rule number four is, probably "Automatic" for some, but it doesn't hurt to have your lines rhyme. When the songs are good but seem to lose their energy place a song that is full of it after that lag, but make sure the lyrics are full of it too. That rule seems like a "Pararelevant" things to point out, don't it? If you must make a song (atmospheric) longer than the average time of four minutes make sure it's a good one, or prepare to "Rally 'Round The Fool." If you must make a song that is reliant on a beat, make sure it doesn't drive like this because it sounds HORRID, and there couldn't be a "Better Lie" because I feel safe, but ready to air drum at the same time. This "Keith Case" is closed; I would have to say it would be the male accompaniment to the following song "The Widow Pari"' who says that if there isn't much to say quantitatively, then make sure it says something worthy; the song matches perfectly with the lyrical content in the song, and sounds like it could be this band's answer to a certain theme heard around a certain holiday. Both are eerie, but worth listening to. OH JOLLY GOOD! If you don't have a lot to say lyrically in either sense, then make sure you have something to say musically, or else why bother with the song at all! Or maybe the rule is that if you are not from "Birmingham" then be prepared to defend yourself if you do not want to get socked in the face. The next rule is to let something go "When It Dies," but that rule is not that easy to follow. I mean, you cannot just forget a parent or grandparent that has been a part of your whole life the whole time, especially if they had raised you, which would be even more tragic; even if they hadn't it is not east to just let it go because it takes time to heal. If you want to make a good album "Rememorable" it is preferred to end with a song that is more tenacious than the track that opens it. My favorites: Tithe, Regent's Court, Automatic, Pararelevant. Better Lie, Keith Case,The Widow Paris and Birmingham.

Rev Theory "Justice"
I don't know if my review will do this record Justice, but I will try to make nice so I do not end up 'Dead in a Grave.' I hate to use the same line twice, but I think the title track is effective in exercising their heaviness, as well as explaining their prowess for writing. Lets play 'Hangman,' and I will give you a hint. This song has a very energetic chorus and vocal delivery, despite it being weighed down by that nu-style southern metal? It reminds me of Invisible Man that has a T_ _ _ _y _ _ _ a _ e _ _ d m_ _. This song proves they have 'The Fire' to write a song filled with emotion, yet does not need to sacrifice vocal cords to the anger gods in the volcano. If you play Russian Roulette with every round filled on this 'Loaded Gun,' without letting the others first, then there is a pretty good chance that you are 'Guilty By Design.' The vocals seem like a mix between David Draiman and M Shadows, and this song sounds like it might fit in well with either of their bands' catalogs; more so likely the latter though. Everyone has their own demons, and many would even say they have an 'Enemy Within.' It would be really interesting to take a journey down this 'Wicked Wonderland' that this band have created; especially if it was a single and actually see what they could create on film. If you find it hard to 'Say Goodbye' to those tender confessionals that just cannot be denied single status, than you must listen to this song and/or request that status. When I saw the title, and started to hear the song I thought of Nickelback I will use that comparison 'Never Again,' but there is no comparison between both songs; I like their song, but in terms of heaviness Rev Theory's track kicks the latter's butt! The final song is another one of those sentimental moments that sound slightly out of place, but they prove that even if you feel like a 'Hollow Man' you are not incapable of writing tunes like these. So if you're a fan of Saving Abel, Theory of a Deadman, and even Velvet Revolver you may enjoy this album as a whole. Some of the best songs are: Justice, Hangman, The Fire, Guilty By Design, Wicked Wonderland, and Say Goodbye.
Relient K "...is for Karaoke"
Cover albums...novelty albums used to give a band more time to create an album's worth of original material, or a tribute to a band's favorite songs made with pure heart and soul. "Girls Just Want To Have Fun," and boys do too,as truth be told it is pure fun, but music sounds better with you. This 'Baby' is one catchy pop song, and Relient K decide to birth their own version, with a slightly slower pace, piano, and Thiessen's distinctive vocals. Let's add another round, as well as ...It's funny how this "One Headlight" has still kept its bulb burning, without getting old, but this version is an interesting change. It starts twangy with a slightly quicker pace that brings out a Relient K shimmer; some sparse piano, guitar bursts, and although it loses its funky solo, it is replaced with a killer rhythm and arpeggio, and adds their own solo. Maybe one of the reasons a band makes these types of albums because in their mind it's their way of saying "You're My Inspiration" to those bands they cover. I like the bursts of guitar and the change in tone, and I do enjoy the vocals, but the emotional delivery seems to be lacking. This next type of cover sounds like a piece of cake, based on their quirkiness, and is right up their alley. They do not have to go "The Distance" to make this song their own of this funky spoken-word flavored alternative rock classic. I do miss that bass in the original, but I am "Crazy" for those guitar arpeggios and "orchestra" bursts in this version. This "Motorcycle Drive By" keeps the same dynamics that cause that engine to run on the road, and move it does; the fire is still burning despite the fact that the match left. Remember that alley we walked through earlier? Well, we somehow came around opt that again because that motorcyclist dropped us off, and who do we meet? "Doctor Worm!" who still is interested in the horns and that light bass-funk, and those fun lyrics. Gotta love that old "Interstate Love Song," which sounds just as good now, as it did when I first heard it on the radio ( years after it came out, though). The version stays pretty true to the original until they finish with an ending in a style have come to love from them after their 2009 release. "Here Comes My Girl" that drove in from that twangy interstate into my dreams; well she is almost as I had dreamed her, as she is pretty close to the original. How about we go to "Africa." The original trip is beautiful, but I love the energy that this one brings, maybe because my girl is with me. "It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you/There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do," and since the sound is kept faithful, I will do so too.The energy is almost the same, but some was lost when Thiessen came on board to sing this version; the quiet breakdown is much dreamier in this version, and in 'Surf Wax America' the harmonies that wave goodbye will make them proud even though they are nada surfer 'Inside of Love.' What is the general consensus of this record's intentions? I believe that everybody wants to rule the world,' but most would do so with the best of intentions. The aforementioned closing track is a rip-roaring rendition of the original; JAWESOME! At the end of the day, I believe this record was made out of pure love for these songs, and the majority of these renditions soared. Some tracks were successful by making more major changes, and some succeeded by making minor ones. If I could only choose three favorites they would be: Girls Just Want To Have Fun, Crazy, Everybody Wants To Rule The World

Noah and the Whale "Last Night on Earth"
The opening song's strongest statement is one we have heard before, but "Your life is your life gotta live like it's your life." You can live for others, but live yours as well. "Tonight's The Kind of Night" where you can realize that everything could change, or just enjoy the scenery of the night sky; I can just call it star gazing. Tom Petty anybody? Maybe it is the night I can learn a new word that is revealed in the chorus, or just learn that "L.I.F.E.G.O.E.S.O.N" Ohhhhh, I get it! The sound of the song reminds me of the funky acoustic style that Everclear sometimes bring into focus. This next song is definitely not a 'Wild Thing' when it comes to sound, but the girl that is sung about makes me scared. Ager can often cause irrational and dangerous behavior, even more so when that person has anger management issues, or is just so sick of smelling the bullspit on someone's breath; there sounds like there is a subtle reggae touch, or something that could be mistaken for it by pundits like me. The power of music, and how it can keep you young; or just the power of rock 'n' roll, and those who can believe in it. A song that proclaims they would 'Give It All Back' just to do it again in this retrospective journey demonstrating that power; with a xylo as the star in coldplay-esque tune. I was a loser? Oh, yeah..that's 'Just Me Before We Met,' oh and lookie here..Still am. No matter how amazing someone is they cannot always work miracles, but I'm not sure if you would want to...is that being cocky? Let me just contemplate my life under the 'Paradise Stars' as this piano goes solo. They say that good things come to those who wait, so is it stupid that I'm 'Waiting For My Chance To Come?' I'm not just sitting on my butt doing nothing, even though the folky-southern twang of this song is perfect for doing so.It's so easy to give up " 'Cause it's hard to feel like, you're worth something in this life," but that is why you must try to make a change, preferably positive, in someone else's life. Just what is 'The Line' that divides cheating between getting even; even if the guy may be a drunkard, does that means he still deserves it? It does not explicitly say she does anything, but you can tell that something isn't right, and i'm not talking about the sound. I guess it's fitting that an album with a title such as this would end with a song like 'Old Joy.' Some of the best songs: Life is Life,Tonight's The Kind of Night, Give It All Back, Just Me Before We Met and Old Joy
Death Cab For Cutie "Codes and Keys"
As they walked down the Narrow Stairs the band realized something; that not only did they feel Pity and Fear (which had to be one of my favorite tracks which had a temple-rock vibe and beat that picked up the pace..let's say indie-rock's answer to speed metal that gradually sped up). It was funny because they see that the Ice Is Getting Thinner, and they realized why the ice was melting. They were running in the previous track only to come to a stop, the "Home Is A Fire!" It has this really quick percussive typewriter type beat in back amongst beautiful spacey harmonies they are known for. The beat becomes louder and more persistent to be known, but the rest of the instrumentals, as well as the lyrics, fight for even distribution. I thought by the title, that it was negative, but the lyrics had positive connotations that of love; it also mentions that things change. Some people find it easy to unlock their writing ability in anything, others struggle because we don't have the "Codes and Keys" to do so, but the songs on this record may not unlock our writing ability, or mine, but it lets us open the doors to the souls of these gentleman, and what the married life has been like the few years since that trip. There is claustrophobia when reading the lyrics that we may be protected, but are we living? Ironic that the few lines are a refrain saying we are alive. "Some Boys" like their percussion, and some boys like their guitar solos. Some like the emotion, so much where you've cried an ocean, then fall into a depression, and I'm just guessing I'm wrong. That some don't know how to love and some sleep alone, some do whatever and still bring the girl home. The percussion is stellar in this track and the shimmery bridge, amongst the harmonies just have me saying some boys can be crazy for hating this song. I'm thinking of the Foo Fighters as I listen to the "Doors Unlocked and Open" again which starts with a prominent uptempo beat and some bluesy strumming. It seems that there has been someone drowning in some distortion at times. The first single was a great introduction to this album with it's killer beat and it's reggae flavor through an independent/alt-rock filter, and the strumming is really nice, as well as the final stanza, which makes the song even better because it does ring true; and when you don't feel like a person that belongs in a city you were born in "You Are A Tourist," and it's time to go. As we listen to the first few minutes we have "Unobstructed Views" of the sentiment in the piano and where the emotion comes from, and a song of dedication and love; there is nothing else, not even perfect truths, because they don't exist. The first half makes it easy to think of stuff, and then we hear Gibbard's voice finally in. The mixture of slight guitar-funk and blues in the production of this track make a "Monday Morning" more glorious. This "Portable Television" seems to start with an old-school country vibe until the beat comes in, followed by some tambo. The pace picks up and this song becomes the soundtrack for passing blurry scenery across the country side; on a road trip destined for tons of activity and "civilization." I love the piano in this song as well as the last stanza. The lyrics as a whole address the struggle between the change from lifestyle to that of the other. Next, we might address the disagreements and discord that all lovers go through that test the strength of the branches "Underneath The Sycamore Tree" as the beat is aligned with some bells and xylos, more prominent bass, and the vocals of Gibbard. The next song reaches for the heavens as the song soars, lifting off from "St. Peter's Catherdral" with a complete synergistic effect on the listener taking them to new heights by the atmospheric and grandiose space produced by the harmonies, percussion and strings."Such ambition never failing to amaze me/It's either quite a master plan/Or just chemicals that help us understand/That when our hearts stop ticking/This is the end/And there's nothing past this." Except the final track that starts with some lovely strumming (slight-folk) and many strings abound, some bar piano, and a beat that brings it all together for a song that is perfect for those that would prefer to "Stay Young, Go Dancing," and could be one heard at a bar known for playing country western. Favorite codes and keys are: Home Is A Fire, Some Boys,You Are A Tourist, Portable Television, St Peter's Cathedral, and Stay Young, Go Dancing.

3 Doors Down "Time Of My Life"
I have always liked 3 Doors Down, though they sometimes seem like a singles band, not always an albums band. They always seem to create some great songs on every album, some of which are chosen as a single, some which aren't, and sometimes singles which shouldn't be. Some of the best off the first record were for those who felt like a loser, wished for the better life, and said if I could "Be Like That" with a life of my own. Songs that were like drinking down poison and getting a smack in the face were great too. The second one has the obvious "Here Without You," "Away From The Sun," and "When I'm Gone," But I prefer the changes that may occur in this dangerous game that has sarah yellin'. Let's just say that after, and including, the third record they have produced records that were focused on creating a great album, as well as some great songs and singles. The next record was one of my favorites from this band and only recorded in Seventeen Days! The only songs that I didn't like as much as the rest were "Be Somebody," "Behind Those Eyes," and "Father's Son." Their self-titled affair had plenty of great songs and singles, but some of my favorites which should have been singles were pages in a book about a runaway, and when it's over you just want to tell her your arms feel like home. The self-titled record was not given enough of a chance, but after listening to it a couple more times I realize it was pretty solid. Now to the new record! Let's just say the first song would be a great anthem to prepare me for the "Time of My Life" with it's desert-rock southern swag, that reminds me of QOTSA, but more of a more mainstream approach. That type of time is the one you want the most "When You're Young" which was the first single, and a wonderful choice at that with a great chorus, message, and hook, and is another powerful anthem about not giving up, and being yourself, even when "You give what you give cause they make you/Trapped inside a place that won't take you/And they want you to be what they make you" or when your dreams come undone. The next song goes "Round and Round" in my head with a powerful start and driving beat, and a nice refrain. When listening to this wasn't like going to "Heaven," but was a sentimental heartfelt song in the veins of the time that he was Here Without You. The "Race For The Sun" wasn't a bad one, but I think it was better to get "Back To Me" which is another great power ballad that 3 Doors Down is well known for creating. I love the saccharin-infused "Every Time You Go" with such a powerful chorus and hook that you cannot avoid that darn bait that has you coming for more, except there is no pain in that cheek from yours, unless it hurts to smile, he he. I guess there are no good songs and "What's Left" is a weak power ballad about letting go of the other and losing part of yourself. However "She Is Love" is really nice song that has a gliding rhythm, and a lovely hook. I'm a "Believer" that a great record often starts and ends strong with a powerful center, and the last song is another light rabble-rouser to end the record strong. There are acoustic versions of "When You're Young" and Every Time You Go, a demo of "train" from the previous record, and after that "The Silence Remains," but not in that order. Overall, the album was better than I had expected it to be and the songs that can help give me the "Time Of My Life" were the opening title track, When You're Young, Round and Round, Back To Me, Every time You Go, She Is Love, and Believer.

B.o.B. "The Adventures of Bobby Ray"
B.O.B. presents an interesting saga of his alter ego, but most of The Adventures of Bobby Ray involves a struggle for the spotlight with all his guests that come to lend a hand, not that he needs it. The first song was all a dream, or it sounds like it. When he woke up he lost ability to fly, almost like his rivals shot his kinda kryptonite right into the sky. But despite his fear of failing in 'Don't Let Me Fall,' he knows where he belongs and who he is. B.O.B was fine when he hit the ground, this guy from Mars (Bruno) laid it down (the hook), was great and the single was a hit, but was not prepared for the success that came for the one after it. He lost some of his power and now has 'Nothin' On You.' Far from invincible, he did know what to do. Until the guy with two belts, gave him focus, known as Master Lu. I have respect for both artists, so this was one of my favorite songs with an X-Men reference in 'Past My Shades.' One of the biggest songs of the summer, several years ago, was very competitive with his verses, but helped his focus to become the gasoline to send these 'Airplanes' into orbit; props to Haley Williams from Paramore. You can 'Bet I' had a difficult time discerning whose verses were king in this song; T.I. was on point, and Playboy Tre was an underdog that proved to have a formidable flow. Would you classify the next song's power as invisibility? He is a 'Ghost in the Machine.' If you thought you were claustrophobic, or helpless, leave it to Janelle Monae and Bobby Ray to make it worse and proclaim that 'The Kids' don't stand a chance; this is a re-interpolation of Vampire Weekend's song of a similiar name. Does Rivers Cuomo have a hairy chest? He lent some of his 'Magic' on the third single, and some quirkiness as well. The ninth song is one of my favorites for its use of horns, and not those of you know who. Seriously, the song has some of his most introspective and he's on fire; it's kind of like an inside joke if you have not paid attention to the lyrics, but it's one that isn't funny. Outsiders only see one side of 'Fame,' unless they become famous, then they wonder what they got themselves into. Out of his devotionals, there are none 'Lovelier Than You.' This showcases his singing voice, and his more melodic side. Finally, be prepared to enter the '5th Dimension,' but you were probably prepared that i was gonna type something like that, Oh well. His verses refer to his planetary nationality, again, like he did on song seven; the lyrica are interesting though, and we cannot take that away from him. Ricco's vocals are distinctive, and help with the other-world vibe; see people on other planets have soul too!

This band starts off the record with one of their catchiest songs that sounds perfect for a Party in the USA, and even better, they have the New Boyz joining in that party. Let me just say 'I Like It Like That' in this pop-rock-funk-with-little-rap-thing. Then, they follow the first track with the preceding single which was was also pretty catchy too. I mean the chorus just makes you wanna dance at the edge of a Hollywood sign singing woooo-ooooh-oh 'tonight tonight' with another slightly funky pop- rock tune that has a silly line in there; it's not really ironic, but look for it and you might find it. I think they are 'Honestly' in love with beats that work well with lyricists and MCs , and this song's harmonies and lyrics make this a perfect anthem for forgetting your ex, and dancing your sorrows away. So now the next song is an anthem for that special person where you would tell them this song will 'Keep You With Me.' Basically, a song where you cannot keep that person out of your head. I definitely think this song should be on the 'Radio' because it is very upbeat, and is a song it can relate to; some of the lyrics show the sign of the times" thank God for free, wifi/and the key to the mini bar/we fell asleep, on Skype." The song is also about a long distance-relationship where no matter how far apart they are they can send love through the radio, and whenever she hears his song he's singing to her; Bei Maejor also requests the song to be played, as long as he gets to drop a verse too. The next song is an anthem for apathy, and the fact that life can suck super-sized chicken balls. So it's best not to get frustrated over things you cannot change, or worry about what others think, but I think it might take it a little too far to the point where you don't care enough about respecting others' property and feelings. Ryan Folese even raps the chorus..I told you they like their rap music. oh, you don't like what I have to say? 'Whatever.' One of those dancing devotionals to that special girl on the dance floor that would be perfect to serve as an audio track to a scene where two lovers see each other for the first time(on a dance floor, surprisingly) and slowly walk towards one another. 'Why Don't You Love Me?' I know I'm quirky, and stupid, but I can be a very caring person, that will try to do the best I can to spread joy and make your life better to the best of my ability. What is the sound of cheese being spread? Talking to a wall again....oh, and Demi Lovato is in this song! AWESOME! This song wears their hearts on the sleeves with the most sincerity. Not that the other songs did not have the sincerity, but they had other elements dressing it up and the hearts were guarded, so it was not easy to tell.. an ode to a 'Downtown Girl' who loves the attention and the fact that she has her name on the bathroom wall; you guys know what that means! That's what it means, right? It was a hooky pop-rock song, not bad. Let's say this next song is an anthem for the 'Beautiful Freaks' meant to be played on the dance floor that might also ask you to raise your glass to a similiar style anthem for the underdogs! How many have heard that they were 'The Only One' and believed it? We all hope that once those words come out they came from the horse's butt. You heard me, aren't horses' rectums cleaner than their mouths? Isn't that why "coming from the horse's mouth" has bad connotations? This isn't a bad song, but the duet with Demi hits higher points for sincerity. I like It Like That, Tonight Tonight, Honestly, Radio, Whatever, and Why Don't You Love Me.

We The Kings "Sunshine State of Mind"
These guys were in a Sunshine State of Mind when they came in the studio to create this record. Well, For your first order of business it's time to declare that 'Friday is Forever' and that you are through with the girl in shades of blue who broke your heart in two. With all that aside the very breezy and sunny sound of the first track with it's touch of acoustic, strings, and R and Beat. It probably will be hard for you to 'Say You Like Me,' but i can say that this song will not be that difficult to like with it's reggae-rhythm and its soaring chorus, plus the story of the girl that no one ever knows who is the object of their affection. I must say that I love the song, but I cannot ignore the fact that we'll be a dream if you 'Say You Like ME.' Next order of business, find that girl to spend "Every Single Dollar" on because she is worth it. Ok, scratch that..hope she feels the same. I smell hit with that song, and seriously the lyrics are so cute and heart-warming; every single phone call I make to request a song would probably be for that track; maybe not. Can anyone tell me "The Secret To New York?" WHAT?!! HOW MUCH?!! Maybe I'll just sneak through the back, and lookie what I found "Nothing matters anymore, that's the secret to New York." Bummer. Maybe that is why most of them are in such a bad mood. It seems as if they lost the sound on the first three tracks after they saw 'The View From Here' before they learned a semi-important secret, and traded it for a more generic sound. I know you won't 'Sleep With Me,' but it's alright; I'm not looking for that anyway. I know it's not the same, but it reminds me of that tune from Huey Lewis and the News. This song is dedicated to that one girl that I think of every day, and it's true, unlike the girl in this song, I might never get "Over You," or this song, which should also be a single. It returns to that reggae-influenced rhythm section/strumming and cheers to the night where the epiphany arose that this girl wasn't needed. Trying to find the right person is often like kissing a lot of frogs before you get warts, or is that toads? Al that I am saying is that I don't care who you kissed first either as long as you "Kiss Me Last," and do so without kissing any other prospect at the same time. The song sounds like hardcore hippies decided to bring out the boogie boards and rock ; not heavy, but the sound has a lot of attitude, very hooky, and the song that is easiest to mosh to on this record. We all would like a companion, but I'm not sure if I would actually like "Somebody To Call My Own." The song is very upbeat and easy to bob your head too..so even though it doesn't have those reggae-influences on a higher level in this song the vibe is in the same state of mind, and the line is so true "When somebody loves, somebody falls." We know the ending to the story and maybe that is the reason why the state of mind sees no rain in 'You and Only You.' The Best tracks were Friday is Forever, Say You Like Me, Sleep With Me, Over You, Somebody To Call My Own, and Kiss Me Last.

Owl City "All Things Bright and Beautiful"
With those 'Ocean Eyes' of mine it was easy to see what an inviting, addictive, and fun record it could be,but the sound may be a little too sweet to listen to several sessions in a day, or on repeat; to the point where you may need 'Dental Care.' Some of my favorites would have to be Cave In, The Bird and the Worm,Hello Seattle, Meteor Shower, and On The Wing and Rugs From Me To You, among others. One thing I must say is that this record is good during those winter months when we cannot wait to see 'All Things Bright and Beautiful,' especially when those winter months are are long, blistery, dreary, as ours. Odd, was that this winter was not too bad here, yet. 'The Real World' has been known to dissolve around young couple in the throng of love or a more experienced couple in a warm embrace; which is basically what the song seems to be about as this couple come together. The next analogy is so true, especially when that guy or girl get struck with cupid's arrow that mysteriously transforms them into a 'Deer in the Headlights' which the title and the lyrics lead me to believe; I gotta say I like the keys in this song ABSOLUTELY! Whether you see them or believe, there are 'Angels' around. Trying to capture the flame that the 'Fireflies' left on the charts with this track in terms of its arrangement and the same delivery style used in the aforementioned track; it's still a great song ,but one where 'Dreams Don't Turn To Dust.' The next song has a nice drum line in the song, and the vocal interplay between Young and the soft high vocals of Breanne Duren, vocals as sweet as 'Honey and the Bee' kinda bothers the ears at the same time, sounds like a perfect match. The next song's vocal delivery has Young's distinct vocals partnered with a lazy shout-core style alongside lush saccharine, soaring keys ready to crash like a 'Kamikaze.' The next track is a journey that began on 'January 28,1986' through the 'Galaxies' of good beats, lovely arpeggios and keys that sometimes move on the dance floor and sometimes sail on the milky way. Luckily, or not, in time for Young to receive the 'Hospital Flowers' in a song that is retrospective of a grave emergency and is more in the style of that seen by the Vanilla Twilight. Now we hear a song that is as fun a lyrical journey as it is an audio trip with lush arpeggios, the vocal interplay and verses of Shawn Christopher, strings, and the imagery the lyrics create; there was a reason this adventure soaring through the 'Alligator Sky' was the first single. SO is the next song one for the night club or 'The Yacht Club?' does it really matter? They seem really stuffy, and even though it seems pretty cool to be in an exclusive club it also seems like they force you to be someone you're not. Love sometimes may do that too, or maybe give you the courage to try things you wouldn't have. Even swim with the great white sharks would not seem as bad as asking that one special someone to dance or go out for dinner, or even wear that suit and possibly a polyester undershirt in ninety degree weather. OK, maybe it's not that bad. Such as 'Plant Life' seems to stand still, this song does the same, but remember most plants do something while staying stationary. ok, that works. Best Songs:The Real World, Deer in the Headlights,Dreams Don't Turn to Dust, Honey and the Bee, Galaxies, and Alligator Sky.

RED "Until We Have Faces"
In 2009, This band had used their "Innocence and Instinct" to create a powerful album of the same name. It not only started with the one two punch of the "Fight Inside" that may be the "Death of Me," which were both addictive, and singles, but also were part of a record that I had connected with for a long period of time, still do, but don't listen to it as much. Why? Because the record is about the struggle between good and evil, the conscience and the urges, and a battle that is literally all in your head.It also had a song that brought Benjamin Burley out of the shadows, their cover of ordinary world by Duran Duran, and the mystery of you still eludes me like a car chase; the whole record as solid. The first track starts off raw with some slight industrial tendencies and is about becoming yourself; to never give up instead of becoming a cog, and to not 'Feed The Machine,' but to destroy it.Very Strong start indeed! The next track returns to the symphonic angst that they had perfected over the few records, that peaks at the last minute, with a song about losing your identity and feeling 'Faceless.' "One more monster crawled inside/But I swear I saw it die." Were those words fake? 'Lie To Me (Denial)' is another good song I like, but nothing truly distinctive. The lyrics are those of lies we may tell ourselves to fall asleep, or possibly how we start to believe things about ourselves that are not true, but at that time they seem unshakable. The next song is hauntingly beautiful, I love it! 'Let It Burn' finishes nicely with an dreamy symphonic passage with female vocals in assistance. I feel 'Buried Beneath' the majesty of the song that I am writing about which adds bells that are a nice touch, and a very powerful soaring melodic chorus and melodies. This song is one of those dreamy light string and piano soaring anthems/ballads for those who feel like no one can understand, and brings a message to the listener; that they are 'Not Alone.' The next song is one of those angst ridden screamers that would prefer to "Watch You Crawl" with that funk-nu metal riff ; after some grinding on a half-pipe, leaps in the air as drums keep count. "The Outside" starts with stuff we've heard from RED and many others before and during the present, but the "let me out" refrain/breakdown and last minute in general make up for it. The southern fried riff that starts off this track with that pressing ominous drum line, then go into a less distinctive, but still memorable riff; soaring harmonies, a screaming passage towards the end, and the resistance to lose ourselves to become another cog in the machine make us "Who We Are." I guess they say "The Best Is Yet To Come." Well, if it still didn't come yet then there are some high expectations. The song itself is one of those soaring symphonic ballads that might not actually have a face, and unless you remember exactly how the vocals are you may not recall who it is. The last one is a "Hymn For the Missing" and is more of polar opposite to that off the opening track, it's still powerful, but is also beautiful, sorrowful, and clean vocal piano lead number, with some strings in it too; that for the last two minutes has beautiful female vocals on the other side of the cloud which become louder as the song climaxes. Best tracks: Let It Burn, Buried Benath,Watch You Crawl, The Outside, and Hymn for the Missing.
